Conor Guilfoyle: Music/Video

Videos

John Abercrombie Ronan and Conor Guilfoyle with the Callino string quartet

((Mr BP)
Performed in 2005, this clip is the second movement of a suite written by Ronan to mark the 30th anniversary of our father's passing. The camera is quite a distance away so the image is small, but I think it was definitely worth putting up here, to show this fantastic example of jazz and contemporary string writing. The studio recording is due out in 2009. To watch the videos you will need Quicktime. Download it free here

David Liebman - Dublin project live in the Czech Republic

((Off A Bird)
This concert was the first of a European tour. We had done 20 hours travelling and were very tired but still managed a great gig. The video was given to us by a TV channel so sorry about the time code. Michael Buckley a great Irish saxophonist joined the group for the tour, and did a fantastic job playing opposite one of the world's greatest saxophonists

Conor Guifoyle Drum Solo - Wadham's way

((Wadham's Way)
This solo recorded a couple of years ago was dedicated to John Wadham my drum teacher who had recently passed away. I remembered how he was a stickler for good time and form. I tried to maintain both during the solo and hope he would be pleased.

Havana Son

(Conor Guilfoyle)
A promo DVD for my latest Cuban music outing Havana Son. Recorded at the Project Theatre in Dublin by Cormac Larkin of H21 Productions and sponsored by our agents The Improvised Music Company, it gives a good insight into the music and just what to expect if you decide to book us, which will hopefully be soon :-)

Vladimir Karell - Conor Guilfoyle Cuban Jazz Quartet

((El Manicero)
An old Cuban tune gets a new treatment. This clip features Vladimir Karell a Cuban pianist who now lives in Mexico. Also featured is Andrew Csibi on bass and Ed McGuinn on congas. This was taken at the "Jazz Open Day" in Temple Bar in Dublin, and was kindly given to me by someone in the audience. It's a little shaky and not the best of angles but it gives you a nice idea of how the group sounds

Vladimir Karell- Conor Guilfoyle Quartet -Live in UCC

((El paso de encarnacion)
Taken at a workshop/concert we did at University College Cork. The setting was great though the acoustics were tough. Vladimir takes a great solo on this Cuban standard "El Paso Del Encarnacion". This was near the end of our tour and I think it shows in how cohesive the group sounds.

David Liebman-Guilfoyle Nielsen trio -Live at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival Australia

((Footprints)
From a lunchtime gig in Wangaratta in Australia. This small town hosts an amazing jazz festival every Nov. Here Footprints gets the rough treatment, with a combination of high energy and mathematics. Watch how Liebs takes on the trio and wins!

Khanda and KCP Live at Vicar St.

((5 Cities)
Khanda is one of my favourite projects, a unique mix of Indian/Irish and Jazz. This excert was recorded live at a concert in Dublin, and is taken from the DVD/CD 5 cities on the IMC label

George Kontrafouris - Ronan and Conor Guilfoyle - Live at JJ's

((Un Poco Loco)
A one nighter at JJ's, a small club that has been home to countless gig over many years in Dublin. Here with Greek Pianist George Kontrafouris and Ronan on bass.

Menage A Deux - Live at UCC

((Lydian Vibe)
This is taken from a lunchtime concert at University College Cork. The acoustics are extemely live as you will hear, but I hope brings across the energy of the duo

((The Peacocks)
From a Concert in Dublin featuring Joe Lovano and Jim McNielly with the National Concert Orchestra playing the Jimmy Rowles classic.

Lindsey Horner with the Tommy Halferty Trio

((Bridge of Souls)
Lindsey Horner is a multi instrumentalist from New York, who lived here in Dublin in the 70's. In fact we played our first jazz gigs together at Bruxelles pub in 1979. It was great to get together and play again at JJ's. Here is Lindsey's blues inflected tune "Bridge of Souls", which he dedicated to his old Irish band mates Mike Nolan and John Wadham.

Mark Levine-Michael Buckley, Conor and Ronan Guilfoyle

((My shining hour)
Recorded at JJ's, with Pianist/Author Mark Levine this one nighter was swinging. Piano is a little low in the mix for Mark's solo, but you can still hear his great playing.

Tommy Halferty Trio Live at JJ's

((My Shining Hour (outro))
Here's what 30 yrs of playing Quarter Notes with the same person can do for you! Taken from a very recent gig in JJ's. It was high energy all the way. This is the outro from the first tune of the night. The rest of the gig is available on request.

Phil De Greg with the Tommy Halferty Trio

((Alone together)
Phil was here last year teaching at Newpark, and he sat in with the trio. We had such a good time we decided to do a full gig this year. This track is from that gig, and as you will hear was a whole lot of fun!

Pat LaBarbara and Four in One

((Ask a simple question)
Another one from the archives. This track is taken from my debut jazz recording. An LP made in 1988 with a group we had called 4 in 1. The great saxophonist Pat LaBarbara was a guest on the date. The group was the Guilfoyle/Nielsen Trio (before we became that) with saxophonist Mike McMullan. This beautiful ballad was penned by Mike, on which he plays soprano, followed by a wonderfully plaintive solo by Pat. I remember it was recorded late at night and that feeling comes through. Nearly 20 years later and it still stands up well.

Steve Coleman plays Dizzy Atmosphere with the Guilfoyle/Nielsen Trio

((Dizzy Atmosphere)
We recently discovered this in our archives.Steve was here at Newpark School doing a workshop and we got together one evening just to play. It’s very unusual to hear him playing standard material, swing or 4/4 for that matter. He does it all here and is burning! The quality is low because it was recorded on a Sony Walkman Recorder (remember those!), and never meant for public consumption, but the playing is such that I thought it’s worth putting out there. It also gives a chance to show me playing with one of my musical heroes. He may not remember, but I'm proud of it!

Conor and Ronan Guilfoyle Radio Interview

((Radio Interview)
This 30 min programme is from a series done for radio on siblings in music. It was fun to reminisce about our start in music and talk about the important influence of our father in our musical upbringing.

Guilfoyle Nielsen Trio

((Guilfoyle Nielsen Trio)
A track from an unreleased demo recorded in 1993! This innovative trio was mixing meters before it became either profitable or popular :-). Can you name that tune? with extra points for the time sig.

Khanda

((Over the Moor to Maggie)
Myself on Tabla, Ramesh Shotham on Gatham and Martin Nolan on low whistle, playing an Irish melody with an Indian folk rhythm

David Liebman with the Guilfoyle Nielsen Trio

((Song for Liebs)
Taken from the recording "After Dark" on the IMC label

Tommy Halferty Trio

((In Two)
A track from an upcoming release by Tommy Halferty. A trio with myself on drums and Ronan on bass

The Improvised Music Ensemble (TIME)

((Back Door)
Straight ahead septet recording

Odd Meter Clave Samples

Montuno in 5

()
Here's a practical demo of a montuno in 5. Ariel Hernandez on Tres, Andrew Csibi on Bass and yours truly on Drums, Congas and Bongos.

Montuno in 7

()
Here is an example of a typical montuno changed to 7. I midied the piano and bass (sorry about the sounds). I play the kit congas and bongos, and it's based on a 2-3 clave, but of course changed to 7.

Tumbao in 9 with cascara and bongo

()
This example has the bass playing a typical bass tumbao applied to 9. I play cascara and an adaptation of a conga pattern on the kit. I then overdubbed the bongo part, as I wanted to show typical latin phrasing applied to an odd meter.

Son in 15

()
This is based on a Cuban son but now in 15. It can be thought of as three bars of 4 and a bar of 3 if preferred. No kit on this, I play timbales. I also change from bongo to bell, as the timbale moves from cascara to mambo bell to keep the traditional flavour. It's based on 2-3 clave.

All Blues in 9

(Conor Guilfoyle)
Here is a well known bass line given the odd meter clave treatment. So for the musicians - The original is in 3/4. If you subdivide each pulse into groups of 3 (triplets)you get 9 of them. I take this 9 and redivide them into 2+2+2+3, and use a 9 clave with it. Though it sounds complicated it has a happy ending :-) Hint: Bass drum keeps the original 3 pulse.

The Bogmen

The Bogmen

((4 country roads)
The Bogmen so the story goes, were formed by a couple of farming brothers in the 1980’s, who decided that all these “young bucks” were making money out of music so why shouldn’t they? Well many reasons actually, one being they had no idea whatsoever about music. Not to let a little thing like that stand in their way, they went to the studios to make their “hit” album, armed with a Casio keyboard and a guitar. Here are a couple of the results, from this now legendary session. This is not a joke folks! Though it may be the most “seriously funny”, recordings ever made.

The Bogmen

((Picture on the wall)
As a drummer with designs on advancing and developing the techniques of time, I bow in front of these masters!

The Bogmen

((Let's twist again)
Have another! These guys just keep better or worse depending on your point of view.

The Bogmen

((Jug of Punch)
Ok by Popular demand here's another couple of tracks. The amount of hits these guys get.....I'm starting to wonder where did I go wrong:-)

The Bogmen

Funny stuff

Sam Ulano

((The SS Rhythm)
Although under the funny stuff, this is actually quite brilliant. Drummer Sam Ulano gives us a rhythmic tour of the world in his own unique way. One of the most in-demand show NY show drummers of the 60’s and 70’s, this one man tour de force has published literally published 100’s of drum books and now in his 80’s shows no sign of slowing up.

Maynard Murphy

((The Chesire Cat Walk)
Back in the 70's some well known guys (I know who they are but am not naming) at the the Irish national radio station RTE did a very clever dubbing job with a track by Maynard Ferguson which includes Chick Corea and Steve Gadd. I found this in the collection of the late John Wadham. Great fun!!

RTE Gael Linn Auditions

((It's now or never)
In the 1960’s RTE the national broadcaster in their wisdom decided to have a talent contest through the Irish language. The results being so disasterous, they decided to open it up to the English language. It was an open door audition with one contestant after another parading in to sing with a very fine band, which included John Wadham on drums, Noel Kelehan on piano, Martin walsh on bass and Rick Walsh on guitar. Fortunately the results were recorded. There are hilarious tracks with completely misguided people singing hits of the time. The band were facing them in the studio and they told me, it was all they could do to not crack up. I know it’s a bit cruel to laugh at people’s hopes (misguided as they might be), but compared to the teenage humiliation on today's audition shows, it’s actually quite quaint and very funny.

RTE Gael Linn Auditions

((The wonderful Mrs Daly)
What can I say about this! Enjoy but please try not to actually die laughing. Back to TOP
