Odd Meter Clave for drumset uses a unique approach to odd time signatures, taking the tried and tested rhythms of Cuba and adjusting them to fit various meters. Beginning with an in depth study of the various claves and their qualities, moving on to the basic rhythms in 4/4 which are the templates for their odd meter counterparts. The odd meter section is divided into 3 chapters, clave in 5, 7 and 9.

In each section there is an analysis of odd meter pulse, the clave and their relationship. The student then builds the rhythms of Mambo, Songo, Guaguanco, Mozambique etc. to fit the new claves. These rhythms work on many different levels, as odd meter learning tools, as co-ordination studies or just great sounding grooves.

Finally there is a chapter on building your own claves. Here we see some of the possible permutations that can be created by combining and adjusting claves, allowing the student to create original claves on which to build their own unique patterns. With over 300 examples this unique book/Cd, opens a whole world of new possibilities, based on a deep tradition.

WHAT THEY SAY!!!

"It’s a great book, I really recommend it to all musicians but especially to the drummers interested in expanding and developing a clear understanding of Claves and rhythms from Cuba in different meters. Thank you Conor for putting this information together in this book."

Dafnis Prieto

"Conor has done a superb job of basing his adaptations on the bedrock of tradition. What’s even better is that this book is not just for drummers and percussionists. Indeed, it is a treasure trove of great adaptations in odd meters of Afro-Cuban rhythms to the kit – but this book will also inspire bassists, pianists and most of all composers and arrangers who are looking for something completely different. Bravo!!!"

 Bobby Sanabria

“Conor has addressed a topic that is in the forefront of contemporary drumming. By analyzing odd meter from a different vantage point than the norm, he is in essence describing the intersection of the worlds of Latin and Indian rhythmic concepts – how the clave and the tal combine in theory and practicality, way beyond surface and obvious characteristics. It is important that all instrumentalists who profess to be up on current trends read this book.”

 Billy Hart

"Conor's book is an incredible work.A real natural fusion of elements. It extends upon a deep Afro-Cuban-Latin tradition. In the text it show's, and the enclosed CD allows the listener to hear the wide variety of options that one can develop to deal with many of the concepts being utilized in contemporary music. A fantastic challenge for any instrumentalist looking to expand the understanding of these wonderful rhythms in our world".

 Adam Nussbaum

"After Reviewing this new book entitled “Odd meter clave for drumset” by Conor Guilfoyle, I am entirely convinced that it will have an enormous impact on the further development and growth of this type of music and the complex rhythmic accompaniment associated with it’s peformance. The book is structured in a logical and straightforward order. It begins with a very enlightening preface covering the most common clave patterns in 4/4, and then moves into the areas of applying the clave concepts to the time signatures of 5, 7 and 9. This not only enlightens the student, but also stimulates his or her own clave possibilities to fit the musical situations that they may encounter. This is a marvelous book that will serve as a huge milestone in the drum book industry".

 Keith Copeland

"Cuban music is such a great font of information for drummers and, thankfully, there are methods available to learn about the basic grooves and what drummers can do with them. Conor's method trancends the "ordinary" and gives us all a fresh and creative look at the world of Cuban music and rhythms. If expanding your rhythmic vocabulary is one of your goals, this method is sure to provide practical information".

Chuck Silverman

"Just listening and trying to groove with the accompanying CD would be enough in itself, let alone to have the parts all written out by Conor Guilfoyle places this book in a special category by itself-a fantastic study for all instrumentalists, not only drummers.
